I see people with insane anti-China opinions everywhere. Doesn’t matter if they are educated or uneducated, low-wage workers or big shots in tech industry, liberal or conservative journalists. Their minds are totally open to any conspiracy theory or bad news about China.
Mention the word “China” and they will immediately spout a stereotype or fake news. For example, a director at my work said, “Oh, you went to China? They have banned Winnie the Pooh. Haha.” I didn’t bother explaining to him that Shanghai has a Disneyland with a huge Winnie the pooh attraction. Another guy, a nasty VP, loves to virtue signal about “forced labor camps” in Xinjiang. A senior VP wasn’t impressed at all and dismissively pronounced, “If you’ve been to one Asian country, you have been to them all.” Casual racism and mind-boggling ignorance.
Anyways, if you are interested in learning about the real China, here are some western YouTube bloggers — 30, if I counted correctly. Some just focus on fun things like travel, daily life, food, technology, and culture. Others like Nathan Rich and Daniel Dumbrill are more political. Cyrus Janssen is a positive political guy (“US and China should get along”). Gweilo60 — who has lived in China for a decade or so — and Barrett are mostly informational, with a sprinkle of politics. But they are all good.
And they are from all over the world — USA, UK, Sweden, Russia, Australia, Colombia, Portugal etc. Some speak fluent Chinese and others not so much.
Most importantly, you get to see the real country and the people. And hear some fresh perspectives from people on the ground — unlike the China watchers who don’t speak Chinese, don’t like China, and most likely have never been to China.
